Painting Brass

Is it necessary to prep brass - in my case bumper posts - prior to painting? If so, how? And is acrylic or enamal paint more suitable for brass?

Thanks!

I use an acrylic enamel paint on most brass I paint. Being water based, its a much easier clean up for my air brush. Lighter colors need a light grey primer as a base coat, especially red and yellow colors. I normally strip the brass of its factory clear coat, followed by soaking in vinager to give the brass a light etch. This gives it some "teeth" for the paint to grip and not chip off as easily when handled. I bake each coat in my oven at 170'F for one hour. Obviously if details or repairs have been done with glue instead of solder, you cannot bake them. Same for items like wheelsets as they have insulation in them. Those have to air dry. Proper cure time between colors, decaling and clear overcoat is necessary. Its not a fast process but the reward is a stunning model to be proud of. Mike
