Narrow Gauge Layouts On 2nd Orange County (CA) Tour – May 12

Three narrow gauge layouts will be open on a free layout tour on May 12 in Orange County, CA. The layouts are:

Terry Fearn – Terry’s HOn3 layout is based on the Denver & Rio Grande Western's Marshall Pass line. The principal town on the layout is Sapinero, west of Gunnison, Colorado, with a branch line to Lake City. The layout is set in the mid-1930s when the annual livestock movements and lumber were the primary traffic for the railroad plus a daily passenger train.
The layout was started in 2002 and partially fills a 10' x 12' foot spare bedroom. Construction is nearly complete with some minor additional scenery remaining to be completed. Operations are point-to-point with the branch to Lake City. Power is DC with block control. Structures are a combination of kit and scratch-built buildings. A photograph of the layout appeared in the August 2011 edition of MODEL RAILROADER in the Trackside Photos section.

Dennis Ivison – Called the "Never Come, Never Go", by the locals, the NCNGRR began operations 1876 to provide rail service from Nevada City to Colfax, where the 22 ½ mile route interchanged with the Central Pacific. At the outbreak of World War II the U.S. government forced the closure of the gold mines and, with its major customers gone, the railroad was scrapped in 1942. Dennis always loved steam engines and narrow gauge trains, so after 35 years in N-scale he tore down the SP of Arizona and moved into O-scale. The new narrow gauge layout is in the same 20'x 28' train room. The layout is set in the fall of the 1910 to 1912 time period.
The bench work is built almost entirely out of blue foam, and the hills out of white beaded Styrofoam. Control is DCC with the MRC Prodigy Advanced Wireless system, and Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoders. The layout is lighted for either daytime, or night time operations; with corresponding sound tracks provided by “Fantasonics Engineering” and localized sounds by “Innovated Train Technology” modules. Scenery is in the early stages.
The three turntables are Walthers HO models that he will rebuild into O-scale, while the track and turnouts are Micro Engineering code 83. The locomotives are Bachmann and have all been kitbashed, weathered, or personalized, while the rolling stock is still (temporarily) out-of-the-box. The layout is currently populated with several MTH Rail King buildings that will eventually be extensively “kitbashed, weathered, or personalized”, with the remainder of the structures to be scratch built.

Randy Scott – This O-scale, three-foot gauge layout depicts the high desert country of New Mexico. The around-the-walls-of-the-garage track plan includes a small yard area with engine facilities, a town and station scene, a stamp mill, desert arroyo and staging yard. All the locos are DCC controlled and feature sound decoders by Soundtrax. Scenery is about fifty percent complete. Photo web link: http://www.ocngm.com/Randy/Layout.aspx
