Patrick, I had 3 Van de Graaff Generators at one time, but I removed the 1.16-million-volt unit from the house because the arcs were penetrating the ceiling and attaching to the house wiring, tripping breakers.
I still have a more manageable 600,000-volt unit, pictured.
I've always liked high-voltage devices because of their dramatic discharges, but I got away from Tesla Coils because of their dangerous primary excitation voltages.
My recollection was that the lab equipment was from the original Frankenstein ("that's Frunkensteen!") movie.
Hal, I don't doubt that you'd get enough feedback into the house wiring. I saw the big one that MIT had at the Boston Science Museum about 30 years ago.....8 million volts makes a lot of ozone. Glad it was in a Faraday cage.
