Help With Proto 2000 GP38-2 Fuel Tank

Hi,
My first post is a request for help (go figure). I have a P2K GP38-2 that I put a TCS LL8 decoder in and thought I did it correct. When I pit it on the test track to program, I get a message that there is a short detected and the locomotive runs independent of my hand held controller. I'd like to check the wiring, but can't figure out how to remove the fuel tank to get at the motor and check to see if it's shorting against the frame. Most folks have problems getting the shell off, but that is not the case. Has anybody taken the fuel tank off without destroying it by prying? I don't see any tabs or connectors and the instructions look like it's a slip-on fit.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

I think what holds the tank on is a thin strip of double-sided tape inside the fuel tank.
