Building The CMMR

To cover up all the scrape marks I masked off the pad and airbrushed it with some Neutral Gray paint. I then sprayed some black at areas between the rails to simulate spillage and leaks. After the paint was dry I penciled in some expansion joints.

Here it is with the buildings temporarily in place. I still need to add some lights and the fuel tank, so I won't put them down permanently right now.

The final result looks very good

I did the same as you by making a thick layer and everything shrank, then you're stuck having to do lots of patching up.
I then needed to extend the area and used plaster of Paris and it was much easier.

That looks really good Lloyd.

If you don't mind me asking what model is your container crane?

Tonight I finished up the fuel depot. It started with a kit from Busch. I had quite a few leftover parts from the maintenance facility so I decided to build a filling platform to make it a little more interesting. I made the piping from sprues and the handrails on the stairs are formed from wire.

Here is everything assembled and painted.

For the decals I downloaded some warning sign images and printed them off on Testors decal paper. I also used some Krystal Klear to make the glass for the pumps (still a little wet in the pictures!).

What I like about building scratch stuff is letting your imagination run wild and coming up with stuff like you did
Nicely done!!

Well I haven't done much on the layout this winter, but I did work on a couple of locomotives. One is an Athearn BNSF AC4400 that I picked up at our local train show, and the other is a Walthers Trainline VIA F40PH. I added sound decoders and operating ditch lights to both of them, and I also detailed the F40PH. For details you can go to the Projects page at my website.

Here are a couple of videos with the sounds from the SoundTraxx Economi decoders. First is the AC4400...

And here is the F40PH...

Hey I was just wondering what you've been up to, now we know!
What did you use for speakers?

Hey Rick - both units have Digitrax SP53188B speakers, although I had to remove what I am assuming is a bass chamber portion of the speaker enclosure to fit it into the F40PH. The pictures of the install are on the website.

Well I still haven't accomplished much on the layout because I got another request to do up a locomotive for CEMR. Their GM is retiring at the end of April and they wanted to give him a retirement gift. This time they wanted an SD40. The unit they supplied was a Kato that was factory painted in BNSF colors but had been painted over in CIT blue.

I disassembled the unit and stripped all the paint with brake fluid.

Here is the painted and decalled finished product. For more details you can go to my website.
