An inside look at life as an Engineer (Q&A)

In the 1940's, my Dad was a fireman on 2-8-2 Mikados and 2-8-0 Consolidations.

He was a member of ABLE. (American Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers)

When train crews discussed Union Seniority, they referred to it as "Whiskers", as "Carl has longer whiskers than Howard".

When Dad had yard duty and I was out of school, he would take me to work with him and I would spend the day in the cab of an 0-6-0 Switcher,
which was quite a thrill for a 7-year-old! I would learn the function of every valve, lever, and gauge in the cab!

I would step on the pedal that opened the Firebox door whenever the fire needed more coal!
