This runs on three rails, so it would be AC, right? The wheels turn freely (although I did clean out a hornet's nest attached to the undercarriage), but no joy when I attach transformer lead to center push roller, and the other lead to one of the wheels...any suggestions? I assume that you have taken the mechanism out of the body?
What medium did you use to clean it?
Do you know if it was running in the past?
 
I put the AC voltage leads on the locomotive (one on the wheel, and one on the contact in the middle), and the motor hums, and there is nearly continual sparking between where the two arrows are. Seem fixable?
