    Life-Like F40 Parts Diagram Needed

Looking at that pic, I'm wondering if the motor and driveline are even "original" to that locomotive...

    Show off your favorite Locomotive

Of course, the Milwaukee never really had any of these. But Amtrak did, around 53 of them. And I got to run every one...!

    DCC on DC

OP: If you're paying Rapido's prices, I wouldn't recommend modifying anything inside a brand-new unit so as to [supposedly] make it run better on DC. Just not a good idea. Having said that, the dcc equipped model WILL run on DC. However, be aware that it won't run as "satisfyingly" as it would...

Trying to find a sound replacement

As mentioned above: How does it run RIGHT NOW ? Smooth, works as you would want ? In that case, I'd leave it alone.

    Walthers GP35

Willie wrote: "My experience is with the older LifeLike P2K GP35's which run very well" LifeLike didn't make any P2K GP35's to my knowledge. They DID make GP30's (I have three of them). Walthers Proto has made GP38's and GP35's (I have a couple). But this was after they bought out LifeLike in...

    Smaller engines

bns wrote in #22 above: "Assume "No" 6 axle diesel or large steam engine will operate on 18"." Hmmm... I have HO Kato Unitrack. Some of it is their 18.75" radius curved pieces. I regularly run the following 6 axle and longer 4 axle units: - Proto 2000 SD7/SD9 - Atlas SD35 - Bowser C628 -...

    I forgot something

That looks like a Suydam Pacific Electric steeplecab motor from years ago. (or perhaps Sacramento Northern) One thing, however... An engine like that wouldn't have a modern "Faively" type pantograph. It would have the older "diamond" style ... like you'd see on a GG-1. Then again, anything's...

    Pantograph maintanance ?

On a big electric engine, there's a carbon strip that is on the top edge of the pantograph that makes contact with the overhead wire (not bare metal). They do wear after a while, and can even break. On Amtrak they'll get inspected before each trip. Probably same for any other electrified...

    Smaller engines

    I'd be looking at new-old-stock or used Proto 2000 GP7's and GP9's, also GP30's, Proto 1000 RS11's and RS2's, Kato RS2's. All great runners.

P2k gear issue. No not that one, completely different

I'm look at the pic in reply 19 above. Look CAREFULLY at the truck. Look at the right-hand side frame. It's not "in" all the way. There's where you side-play is coming in. Take the truck OFF the locomotive -- all the way. You'll have to disconnect some wiring, too. Take it fully apart, then...

    Quite the beast!!!!!!!!!

If you want an engine that will last ... get an EMD. That thing must be approaching 70 years old...!

Re the BNSF storage video in #502 above... Lots of gensets (a design and operational failure) and GE's. EMD's? Not very many. Why is that?

If you were to work for a railroad, which one would it be and what position?

"what does a "fireman" do after 1959?" On the commuter trains from Danbury (CT) to New York City, the fireman kept the steam heat going in the winter. I must have lost a little bit of hearing going back in those FL-9's to check the boilers a few times each trip. In winter, there was also a...

Freesco... I know that the z21 apps (both the new and old ones) support the Roco z21 hardware (of course), and also: - Digikeijs DR5000 (now out of production, but still show up now and then second-hand) - YaMoRC "YD7100" (not released yet, delayed in production due to chip shortage) - ZIMO (I...

If you were to work for a railroad, which one would it be and what position?

I hired out in 1979, one of the last to start out as a "fireman" on Conrail before they stopped hiring firemen in 1980 (and the craft largely disappeared). Got promoted, ran trains for Conrail, Amtrak, even a little on Metro-North (I also was one of the now-gone "forever firemen" on MN in 1983...
