Walthers says "Just buy a new Shell"?

I'm NOT picking on "Blues90" here..... I'm picking on all of you as a group that keep talking about being priced out of the market. What CENTURY are you guys living in??? Here's my view on it: I just picked up a 1990 issue of Model Railroad Craftsman magazine and found an advertisement for...

    Improving Athearn 'Blue Box' locomotives

I use either CA (cyanoacrylate or super glue), or black RTV gasket sealant from the auto parts store if I am trying to keep the LED from illuminating the inside of the shell.

Glad I could help! Google Images is our friend. So is Maps.Bing.com for great aerial views of different places, better than Google maps! --Jon

    Help Identifying a Building

"FSM" in the title of the eBay auction would lead me to believe it is Fine Scale Miniatures. http://www.finescaleminiatures.com/index.html I would contact them via email, sending them the link to the auction, as I do not see this structure on their website. But that may be that it's out of...

    Smoke Stack "Hats"

I see that, they definitely work. Questions: 1. What are they made out of? 2. How did you make them?

    Smoke Stack "Hats"

I tired this with heavy aluminum foil, aluminum can, and paper. It's just too small to handle.

    Smoke Stack "Hats"

I had thought about taking a countersunk screw head like this and chucking it into my drill press, then filing the head off of the shank in a pointy sort of manner.

    Smoke Stack "Hats"

I have a two-stall engine house made by Heljan. It has a total of four smoke stack on it, presumably for some wood or coal burning heaters that are against the walls. I need some of those conical "hats" that cover the tops of the smoke stacks. These "hats" need to be about 7/16ths of an inch...

    Athearn DDa40x

Why does everyone (and not just the posters in this thread) keep referring to this locomotive as a "DD-40"? Isn't it a DDA40X?

Would you buy Walthers Proto 1000/2000 locos?

I bought a few Proto 1000 series locomotives from Walthers, I like the smooth running, quiet operation, but now it comes time to buy spare parts, particularly a new cab that I broke by accident. I emailed Walthers, and as always received a prompt reply. But I was told there are no spares for...

    Weathered Structures

OK, so you are in a dirty city setting. Another thing I forgot to ask..... what era? Steam? If so, you will have a heavy collection of soot on the tops of brick parapets, roofs, etc. The brick mortar would be dirty as well. This can be achieved with weathering powders in the dark grey and...
