Fine Scale Model Expo - anyone going?

I know its early, but the group just sent out the announcement for the show. I've signed up and was curious if anyone else was planning on going.

    OT: Christmas present

Christmas arrived and Santa brought a new toy: a 3D printer! (Well, he actually only brought the order confirmation, the printer is shipping from New Jersey due in via FedEx on January 3rd.) I've already downloaded a couple of 3D models to play with. In addition to the standard 3D printer...

Here's how to keep the dust down

For those modeling the more modern era, here's an interesting idea for a model (though I wouldn't add the water  ). m=email&utm_campaign=11-22-17#post102727

    Model Your Circus Train Now!

Now would be the time to get that circus train modeled. Ringling Bros. / Barnum and Bailey Circus is closing after 146 years.

    Reusable Plastic?!

I'm sure that many on the forum are familiar with low temperature alloys, but I just received an email for a similar product, but plastic! I'm sure some of our more creative members could use something like this. Create Your Own Custom Designs Now you can mold and re-mold your own custom...

    AnyRail 6

Is anyone using AnyRail 6? Before I pay for a licensed copy, I'm trying to see if I can either set or measure the distance either between track centers or from the table edge to the track centerline. As close as I could find is the ruler function, but its dimensions are so coarse as to be...

    Happy Thanksgivings

Hoping everyone had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. I used my time off to get the yard ready for winter. Now that that is done, I've got several railroad projects ready to go. A new structure kit: B Smith Coal by Railroad Kits (Jimmy Deignan); painting 2 new (to me) brass trolleys; and, as...

    Video hosting

Just a quick question: Is there a preferred video hosting site other than YouTube? I've been playing with my streetlights and would like to post a video, but not on YouTube (for various personal reasons).

    Looking for ideas

First a bit of background -- in addition to being a model railroader, I'm a ham radio operator and retired software developer and teacher. I came across a book titled Arduino Model Railroad Signals And Other Projects. Not all that great a book (one of these days I'll write up a review), but it...

    New Tool in the Workshop

I'm still in the process of getting this set up, but here is the new tool I mentioned in the Laserboard thread - It has a 50w CO2 laser with a 11-3/4" x 19-1/2" capacity. It will cut/engrave wood, paper, acrylic. Slow going setting it up, as I don't have much free time right now.

    Anyone use Laserboard?

Does anyone have any experience with Laserboard, also known as Polyester Impregnated Kraft Paper or Resin Impregnated Kraft Paper? I just recently heard about Laserboard. It sounds like an interesting material. If you've used it, do you have a good source? What sizes are available? I looked...

    Scratch build design process

Its been quite a while since I've started one of these threads, so here goes. I've decided its time to build a Car Barn (if you've looked at my profile, you'll see that I'm a traction/trolley modeler). After looking at a lot of prototype photos, I settled on these 3. I'll be...

    Street light controller

Working on a project for one of my other hobbies, I dragged (drug?) out all my electronics experimenter supplies. (I'm building a Time Domain Reflectometer to get my ham station ready for winter.) That got me to thinking what I could build as accessories for the railroad. I recently...

Old Timers quiz: identify this circuit

This is for the old timers out there. About 30 years ago, I was building a garage sized layout, since taken down due to a cross country move. As part of that project, I made up 24 parts kits for a circuit to be used with the layout. Now here's the problem: in going through my parts box...

    PCB manufacturers

I'm getting ready to wire up a bunch of accessories on the layout: signals, streetlights, building lights, etc. For a number of reasons, I'm planning on using PCBs to connect the "run" wiring to the accessories. The finished boards will be 1" by 2" and mounted near the accessory. So my...

    Badger Airbrush Garage Sale

As I've mentioned in other threads, I own a Badger 150 airbrush. The other day, I went looking for the manual. Now, I'll admit that I use the FSP method of filing (Flat Surface Piles). Not finding it in a reasonable amount of time, I figured I'd go to Badger's website and download a PDF copy...

    $50 Compressor

I knew it would happen, it just occurred sooner than I expected. Lowes has lowered the price of the small 1 gallon compressor to $49.97. Its item number 98945 if you're interested.

    Home built spray booth

In the mid-80's, Model Railroader published an article on building your own spray booth. I built one based on the article, using a sealed motor exhaust fan purchased from W.W. Grainger and aluminum sheet and angle purchased from Home Depot. It's been in use now for about 20 years (oh how time...

    Other ham railroaders

After noting a couple of amateur radio call signs in members' signatures, I was just wondering how many members are also hams? Do you do anything to combine the two hobbies? Kevin, W1KLJ

    Which track to use?

First, a little background. I've been modeling in HO for nearly 40 years. I'm currently on the 6th HO layout. Our current house (and the last according to my better half) sits on just over 2 acres. We've been working on the landscaping for about 4 years now. My wife has it to just about... is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to - An online railroad bookstore featuring a curated selection of new and used railroad books.
