Great pictures Todd. I forget sometimes about how beautiful a country we live in.

It looks like you see more trains in a day then I see live in 6 months.

Just went over your collection. Great shots and this past August was my first time train chasing Great Northern in Idaho and Washington around Cascade Tunnel. My "stay" for two nights was the little opening almost directly above West Portal by the creek. Really interesting to be standing inside the tunnel near west end and watching headlights which seem not to move, but feeling the quiet deep base of oncoming diesels. I was also searching for any signs of electrification. The only things i found were what looked like two catenary pull off poles with numbers D4 and D5 in aluminium still on them. They are on the curve at Scenic. Old concrete snow shed up on the old allingnement showed a whole bunch of three phase brackets though. Amazing considering their age.

view from my perch at a west bound exiting the portal late in the evening, before turning in to sleep.

That is/was my favorite spot for *years*. Do not even know how many times I spent the night at the West Portal. I took a cot and slept across the tracks pretty much where break in the two fences you see are. Have a ton of chemical pix of this area - in time will get those scanned and can post more. Did you get to the East Portal? More good spots for train watching. Don't try and go in at the ventilation building. When WB, not far after you go over the hole, just where the two lane splits into two roads there is an access road to the right. Down that and you will see stuff.

Thanks Google for the pix!

[edit] and I forgot - check out Skykomish as I think the 'Power' building is still there. No overhead wires or towers though.

Yes i did stop by East Portal, did not hear anything and the doors were closed. I came in from the east, so Wenatche was obviously a stop. Best displayed GN steamer in Wenatche i think. I did drive to check out Skykomish that evening before settling on top of the portal for the night.

Cute mascot, cuter than Chessie the cat. This eastbound eventually made its way toward the tunnel:

The 2 MT do fit between the Station and the burm. Heck what is a little crook in the road?

Looking RR East - right at the junction is xNP, xMRL, BNSF to Missoula, left is the flyover to xGN, BNSF Hi-Line. West from the fly over connection is POVA to Newport/Old Town which pretty much terminates. ( Which you can not see ). Guess I should get thata way sometime.

That was a cool place. I ended up there last august. Did you see the Milwaukee Road snow plow? That plow has a headlight which looks like it came off of one of the box cab electrics.

Woops, only 10 files - station was kinda neat so:

Ya, did see a snow plow but for reason's unknown, no pix. I usually get those types of pix. Cranial Gas I guess. Now I have to go back to my chemical pix as I was there 15/20 ( or more ) years ago when everything was at least painted and somewhat fresh.

Also, I did forget to mention - that town was booming with commerce. Local delivery/pickup buzzing all over the place. Think that the population was 2600 or close. Nothing like lame ass Libby. They are trucking wood chips to the Moyie Pellet plant, the St Maries mills are definitely busy. Moyie is about 40 minutes West of me. Well, I guess the distance is not all that bad, 140 miles; over to Plummer, then up SR95 to BF then East to Moyie.

Plummer also was a busy place. Town was busy with lots of pick/deliveries too. There were 0 cars waiting for the St Maries turn ( branch off the UP ).

Found this the other day in Troy, MT. ICG is usually a designator for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. It is not an older logging caboose and there is not any information around it other than the logo and car number. Which brings up - why in Troy?

Someone just bought this. Last year when i was there, there was an actual GN caboose on display

Not my picture, i grabbed it off the internet. I have no idea what happened to X88. Now i wish i would have taken some pictures of it. According to the net someone bought that ICG as a minihome. Lack of historical sense is apparent.

GN X88 is still there just East of Troy proper. In the little park that is there. I have a pix in the somewhere.

Eastbound at West Libby. Nothing special but still BNSF!
