Drive rods on Kato GS4.

FIrst of all, I am new to N scale and have never owned any N scale steam. I read on another forum some concern about the new Kato GS4 having wheels tuned by drive rods and not gears. Is this a problem with N scale steamers
Just trying to learn and not spend good cash on something that will be disappointment. From what experience I have had with Kato diesels, they make fine locomotives. Thanks

Welcome to the forum! N scale steam has traditionally had all geared axles. HO has had the wheels turned by the drive rods from one geared axles forever. It takes some tuning when building an HO steam engine kit to get all of the binds out of the drive rods.

I don't have the GS4 so I can't comment directly on the engines performance. I have 3 of the Kato 2-8-2's that are all geared and run very well. Kato has an excellant reputation and I don't think they would risk there reputation with a poor running engine.
