While I agree that the Southern PS -4 IS pretty,the L&N 4-8-2 Ls-1 's,come in a close second. The Seaboard 2-10-2,comes in third.:D .William.

I tend towards the workhorse look, so while the GS-4 Daylight is pretty, my personal favorite (and I wish they'd saved at least one) is the Z-8 series Challengers run by SP&S and Northern Pacific

Milwaukee roads F7 class 4-6-4 Hudsons used on the '39 Hiawatha.

I have to say it's a draw between the H8's and the Niagra's

I've never liked the "going up hill" look that the large pilot wheel and the tiny trailing truck wheels give the unit. Plus the fire box on that unit has allways seemed bulgy to me.

my personal favorite is the Z-8 series Challengers run by SP&S and Northern Pacific. I like the Z-6s better, but I would not put them (or any articulated locomotive for that matter) in to the "Best Looking" category.
I'm still thinking about it, but I am guessing I will eventually choose a Hudson or Northern class for best looking.....

I'm a utilitarian type - if my dad wins the lottery, he goes out and buys whatever Carrol Shelby is currently producing. If I win the lottery, it's a Dodge Ram 2500 (with every option added, admittedly...)

I just like the bulky size of the beasts...

Now on that note, I'd buy something a tad, more, hummm how do you say it, Idiotic?
The Ducati Desmosedici RR, a good use of $50k-$60K...

Sorry Carey,
I do like the PS-4, but it has to be the MT series 4-8-2's. And you thought I's say GS-4...
And I finally got this one running like a watch.

Nope, that's the Sunset Model. The one I bent the axle on while trying to regear it:mad:! I found a replacement up here at Trainfest tweaked a few other things, and now it just needs a littleweight in the tender to be perfect.

Bent the axle? That's gotta hurt. Thats also one reason I never really liked sunset. They were built more for the collector to keep on the shelf, and not the runner to actually use. I've painted more Sunsets that were underpowered, and under weighted than any other.

Yes, their axle material is softer than the NWSL stock. I have several old KTM gearboxes, and NWSL axle stock. I was trying not to remove both drivers. I should have known better. No other problems with it though, or the GS-1 or your old 0-6-0 which I have since equipped with a sausage tender. :). The mainstay of the roster is still KTM though. They wear like iron!

Yeah, me too, but that isn't the question that was asked. If the question was what locomotive do I "like" best, .... My answer would be completely different than "best looking".

4-6-4 Hudson, ala 20th Century Limited. Nothing comes close. Didn't those have four very distinctive "looks" though. The non-streamlined, the roundy bullet one, the one with a "fin" down the nose, and the one with the squarish cylinder cover.... Or am I not thinking about the right set of locomotives?
But you might have just solidified my choice. I've been trying to decide between several 4-8-4 and 4-6-4s but this remined me of the AT&SF class 3460. Hmmmmm.

I prefer the non-streamlined. Has a powerful work-horse look, yet still manages to be elegant. Mmmmm....

For me its a tie between a C&O G9 2-8-0 and a PRR H9 2-8-0.

For me, its gotta be the ATSF's 4-8-4. Man, it just says power, speed, and good old gritty muscle. No streamlining. Who needs streamlining? This machine just shoves the air out of the way with sheer power! Yeah. Gotta love it!

Most any USRA or earlier Mike. This one, built in 1917, is my absolute favorite loco.

With a handle like U-3-b what else would I choose. Actually I do like USRA light pacfics a lot too but I am going to have to stay with the small GTW 4-8-4. Lets just hope Ohio Central keeps her.

Well, she went to a good home:D I only repainted the boiler, the running gear is your original paint. I still have the slope back tender, but I always liked the sausage tender, and I found that one on e-bay. She's re-motored & decodered. No sound:) No room! I only have three sound equipped lokeys. The GS-4, and one each an Alco and a GE Dis-easel.

Something nice about those smaller locomotives. I think these two look better than most because they have the headlight in the center of the boiler rather than up on top.

The 2900's were amazing too, but they had issues if I remeber right...
