Hi all,
I have seen many model and prototype railroads that have the name "terminal" in them. I know that the word terminal means end, but what exactly is a terminal railroad? I.E. the Illinois Terminal Railroad.
Thanks,
Chris

From what I understand, a Terminal railroad does switching at one location - a terminal - rather than moving cars around the country. A terminal could be a small area or an entire town, county, waterfront, etc. They do the moving of the rail cars rather than the delivering railroad.

A terminal railroad usually does switching and interchanging of cars for bigger railroads.Terminal roads like IHB,BRC and TRRA also handles on line customers as well.
