Removing paint and decals?

I'm Having trouble finding an SD40-2 Undec. from Kato or atlas. Is there a safe way to remove the paint and decals from a factory finshed loco.

I use Scalecoat paint remover. It works well on most paints and doesn't harm the plastic. It also smells a lot less than oven cleaner.
Kato engines are very hard to strip. usually only the lettering comes off and the base colour is left behind. As long as you prime the engine before final paint, it should turn out fine. I've done it several times.
