Hello,
Wondering if anybody has any F40PH locomotives for sale (Amtrak.) I'm not sure what I would pay up to (to buy it.) I dont think I'll pay the regular price of one (about $95.00.) Also if your interested in selling one, can you post some pictures?
If nobody has any for sale, do you know of any sites that sell them for a cheap price. Heres an auction I'm watching (F40PH) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19132&item=5972029569&rd=1
Thanks,
Chris Moore

Thanks Jeff,
I checked out Kato's website. It looks like the F40PH's will be about $90. I guess that's a fair price, hope they look as good as the other F40's I've seen.
Thanks,

I imagine that, being a Kato, they'll look okay and run exceptionally well.

I have 2 Walthers F40 PH's & they are a really nice running engine. Lots of power & very quiet. I think I paid $41.00 each for them last year from Terminal hobbies while they were on sale. They are Amtrak phase 1, but I don't want to sell them. Just thought I would mention that Kato isn't the only builder of nice engines, although I have a few of theirs. The Kato's would probably have a lot better detail.
I also have 2 F59's made by Athearn in the Amtrak phase 2. They aren't as quiet as the Walthers engines.

Hi Larry the Athearns can be quietened down, but there's a bit of work involved, and maybe a few unwise words with the work. The majority of noise comes from the drive shafts and universals, which are not the best. When you look at the Athearn drive the motor shafts are at an angle to the worm and it's shaft, causing a lot of flopping around of the drive shafts.
On mine I removed the rubber mounts, cemented two plastic strips in the the wells where the rubber mounts were. Then I drilled 4 holes in the plastic, centered in the mounting holes. Then I tapped the holes in the motor base for 2-56 screws. The result is the motor is lowered, allowing better alignment of the shafts. The better the alignment the less the noise.

Chris your choice of an F40PH is a good one as it allows for a wide time frame, however if you have to do all the modifications suggested by CBCNSfan then I'd purchase the better made models.
